At Least We Didn’t Kill Him

After half an hour, Prometheus still hadn't woken up. Part of me knew that was bad.

Ajax dragged the duke back up the hill, stripped off his armor, and confiscated his weapons. The pudgy noble alternated between pleading and threatening, occasionally trying to bargain with us.

I didn’t know my distrust of the horrible little man could deepen, but it did. Why? Not once did he mention the wolf king’s core.

That alone was enough to make me think he intended to kill us himself the moment he was strong enough, or our backs were turned, or any other scenario that would allow him to turn the tide. We didn’t wrap or bind his wounds, so he sat, bleeding and trembling, weakening. And while we were sure he was at no real risk of death, the duke was in a thoroughly miserable state. The skin on his hands,

arms, and legs was lacerated, more than a few bones fractured, and his left knee was swollen to twice its normal size. That and more made me confident that he wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Just how I wanted him.

“So,” Ajax said from behind as I squatted in front of the duke, waiting for him to either threaten me or make me rich, yet again. I turned.

“Food? I know you’re always hungry, and we went without most of the day.”

I grinned, appreciating how much the big man seemed to know me. I was hungry, although I was fighting to hide it. I didn’t want to be known as ‘he who is always hungry’, after all. Ajax extended a hand and helped me off the ground, then gestured towards the wolf carcasses.

“What is it?” I asked.

“None of my knives can cut these bastards open. And seeing how you and Hera were the only ones to even scratch them. I think I need one of those fancy spider fangs.”

“I’m not sure how fancy they are, but sure,” I said, and pulled open my bag. Except it wasn’t inside.

“Did I give it to Prometheus?” I asked, and Ajax immediately checked the scout’s bag. His head rose and quickly shook.

I turned to the duke, and he immediately cringed and looked away.

“I know Hera doesn’t have it because she’s carrying the other one right now. So that means you’re a thieving prick, on top of a backstabbing coward, too!”

I clenched my jaw and advanced, looking between where he lay and where my bag had been. Had he managed to crawl over and go through it while we were tending Prometheus? Or had it been when we moved and stacked the wolves? Perhaps he wasn’t as immobile as I thought.

I took three large strides and stood over him, before pressing my foot down on his wounded leg.

“I—What? I don’t have it!” he gasped, fighting to dislodge my boot. But the twitch of his lip and guilty gleam in his eyes told me

otherwise.

“Then where is it?” I asked and pressed down with a little more force.

“Search me again, if you don't believe me! You’ll never find it!

Fool.
